Welcome
[edit]Hello Cuppysfriend and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
- To sign your posts (on talk pages, for example) use the '~' symbol. To insert just your name, type ~~~ (3 tildes), or, to insert your name and timestamp, use ~~~~ (4 tildes).
- Try the Tutorial, and feel free to experiment in the test area.
- If you need help, post a question at the Help Desk
- Follow the Wikipedia:Simplified Ruleset
- Eventually, you might want to read the Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines.
- Remember Wikipedia:Neutral point of view
- Explore, be bold in editing pages, and, most importantly, have fun!
Good luck!
Hi! Next time, instead of moving articles with mispelled titles by creating a new article and putting a redirect on the wrong-spelled page, just use the "Move this page" link in the column on the left side of the page. It keeps the edit history of the text, and automatically creates the necessary redirect. Keep up the good work! Cheers! jengod 00:24, Oct 8, 2004 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Cuppysfriend,
I've added {{GFDL}} to

- Image:Auburn Auto Historic Marker.jpg
- Image:1935 Auburn Speedster sm.jpg
Please see Special:Upload, which says
- By uploading a file to which you hold the copyright, you agree to licence it under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.
The GFDL requires that you be credited anyway, which is the requirement you specified.

Re:Francis B. Sayre
[edit]The article said he was a professor at Harvard Law School. So I put academic, since there is no stub classification for "professional diplomat". Do you have any suggestions, then? Otherwise, I will change it back to {{bio-stub}}. Jaxl | talk 00:41, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- It's alright. I might have been a bit careless myself. I will change it back to {{bio-stub}} and maybe propose a new stub for diplomats (I've seen quite a few that need their own category, actually). Sorry about that. Jaxl | talk 00:52, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, I have another solution for the time being. What nationality was Sayre? If he was a natural-born American, I can sort him under {{US-bio-stub}} instead. Jaxl | talk 15:30, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for the information. I'll list him under {{US-bio-stub}} then. Jaxl | talk 20:02, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Of the existing stub types, poltician comes closest, since we don't really have one for government functionary, and besides, generally one doesn't rise (at least in the US) to the rank of ambassador without playing some in the field of politics. As for the SfD discussion, that's over renaming the stub type from {Swedish-politician-stub} to {Sweden-politician-stub}. With 72 stub articles (71 if Per Anger wasn't counted) there's more than enough to justify keeping the type, but the name doesn't follow the usual rules which are to use the country's name and not its adjective in stub template names. Hi, Cuppysfriend! By all means, please make the necessary corrections :-). I am glad that you caught that. I've been through Bloomington, Indiana so many times (live in Louisville and work in Northern Indiana) that my brain just stopped on that obvious detail!!! I am going back through any redirects I made to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (there were only a couple out of 250 edits) to make sure I didn't mess those up either. Your assistance is truly appreciated. Best regards, >: Roby Wayne Talk • Hist • E@ 20:20, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

I really don't think that the sub type of B-25 in this case is pertainant to the article, so that is why I changed it. It is usually perferable to use internal links when possible. There is, however, info about the J model in the B-25 Mitchell#Variants and Design stages section. This section has the same external link that I removed. If you want, you could change the link to B-25J and it would link directly to that section --rogerd 00:18, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
New FSA/OWI template
[edit]Yeah, I just tried to describe the collection in the same careful, complicated way the LOC was doing on its site. As far as I know, the FSA was an independent agency, and never had any connection to the FDA. I think the use of the "Migrant Mother" image for the template is an excellent choice, as it's certainly the most recognizable icon of the FSA effort and very much characterizes the collection.--Pharos 00:40, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

I see you added [1] the name Shadrach Minkins to those buried in the Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec. His biography would be of interest based on your description. However, the cemetery has no record [2] of him. Could you please provide the source of your information. Thank you. Marco Thomas
Thanks for the information. Do you have any other biographical stuff that might be used to make an article? Marco Thomas
What you did already is excellent but please do your intended full article as this is a worthwhile and interesting story. Good work and many thanks. Marco Thomas
To meet wikipedias fair use criteria the photo needs to be doing more than than just showing what he looks like in ar article that isn't about him. It is fine in his article, but not really OK in the Interim Committee article. Have you looked for an image showing all of them together, the image on this page appears to show most of them, and looks better than the individual photos.--Peta 23:16, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- In the Paul McNutt article, there is a free alternative, fair use images shouldn't be used to illustrate the appearance of an individual when there is a free image. You should read WP:FU and WP:FUC if you need more information on where and when to use fair use images.--Peta 23:19, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Mussels and P
[edit]I'm no expert in phosphorus yet, and I would never be when it comes to invertebrates, but I am just a few clicks away from hundreds of people who are, so here's what they have to say.
I guess you're thinking of zebra mussels, but what I can offer is probably still relevant if you're not. A partial skim of a scientific database come up with almost 100 hits on "phosphorus and mussels," mostly on zebra mussels in NAmerica. I saw no suggestion that more P meant fewer mussels. On the contrary, I did see more P associated with more mussels (causal pathways goes both ways, it seems). I also saw that when zebra mussels invaded various NAmerican lakes they sometimes (though not always) reduced the total amount of algae (so greater water clarity), and also may have changed the balance of the species of algae favouring a more noxious one. It appears the way mussels alter the trophic status of lakes (how "healthy" the lakes are) varies among lakes. This all seems like a relatively popular area of research, probably because of the spread of zebra mussels on top of eutrophic lakes through NAmerica.
Does this help? Daniel Collins 03:40, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Image source problem with Image:Auburn Indiana Logo.png
[edit]This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Auburn Indiana Logo.png. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:20, 11 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Nicolette Larson Very Best 1999.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Nicolette Larson Very Best 1999.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:24, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Ross_Lockridge_Jr_1947.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ross_Lockridge_Jr_1947.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 16:38, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Fluvial landforms of streams
[edit]I see you have a history of working on the article Fluvial landforms of streams. I am looking at it from the project Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles where it is one of the longest {{unreferenced}} tagged articles that does not meet at least the barest minimum of verifiability. It has been tagged and completely without references since June 2006. It would be extremely helpful if you had some references you could add to the article to help support its verifiability and notability. Thanks for any help you can give. Jeepday (talk) 14:17, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
One reference is a great start and meets the goal I was striving for on this article. I did put a {{onesource}} so that hopefully someone will come along later and do more. But you have met the goal of Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles. Thank you :) Jeepday (talk) 02:23, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Nancy Andrew
[edit]A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Nancy Andrew, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? KenWalker | Talk 05:33, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message and your earlier one on this. Sorry I didn't get back to you. I thought I would leave it for you to decide about removing the prod tag. I see that you have done that now. I don't intend to AfD the article. Your comments suggest there is some notablity beyond what I had thought, I am content with that. Cheers. --KenWalker | Talk 23:27, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Bancroft treaties still in force?
[edit]Hi. In the Bancroft Treaties article, the current text says that "The treaties with Albania, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) remain in force" — citing 7 FAM 1277(b) as a source.
I can't find 7 FAM 1277(b) anywhere online. If it was once on the State Department's web site, it doesn't appear to be there now; the existing link in the article is dead, and a search on www.state.gov turned up nothing. Also, a Google search came back empty except for this Wikipedia article and some other page which had copied the Wikipedia article.
It had been my understanding that the Bancroft treaty with Czechoslovakia was unilaterally terminated (with notice) in the 1990's by the US after the Czech government refused to agree to a mutual recission. If 7 FAM 1277(b) said that this (and the other two) treaties were still in force, I would be interested in knowing the revision date of this section, in order to confirm that it's still current (or not).
If you have some other, currently verifiable source for the statement that the above three Bancroft treaties are still in force, would it be possible for you to go back to the article and edit it accordingly? Thanks. Richwales (talk) 05:27, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'm very surprised to read that the nationality treaty with Bulgaria was still in force — and if you hadn't provided that State Dept. source, I would have insisted that this couldn't possibly be so. I would very much like to find more info as to why the Bulgarian treaty hasn't been unilaterally abrogated by the US in the same way as the Czechosolvak treaty was. The same set of legal arguments should presumably apply to the Bulgarian treaty, as far as I can imagine. Richwales (talk) 16:16, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Soldier's medal recipients
[edit]As mentioned on the talk page, the content isn't deleted per se - rather, it's been converted into a category, which is substantially more manageable. This is the way we deal with the other awards & decorations, generally speaking, and I'm not sure if there's any particular reason this needs to be different. Shimgray | talk | 15:56, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- You're more than welcome to undo the redirect and formally propose a merge, or indeed just merge it outright, but I'm very doubtful that we'd actually gain anything by that - we'd end up with a badly-sourced list cluttering up the main article, which would be duplicated almost entirely by the category here.
- As to future mergers, no, nothing we do just now is going to cause problems with that. Shimgray | talk | 16:26, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Colin Winter book cover.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Colin Winter book cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. I have just rescued File:Amalrik.jpg, which you uploaded, from probable deletion on Christmas Day. Somehow it was removed from the article Andrei Amalrik and tagged with an "orphaned image" template. I had just uploaded a file with Amalrik's signature to the Commons for use in the article, so I caught the potential deletion before it took place. Both the image and the signature file are now displayed in an infobox, and I have deleted the "orphan" template from the image file page. Since you're an administrator, you can judge whether I've acted correctly. By the way, I actually met Amalrik in 1977 in Bloomington, Indiana. -- Cuppysfriend (talk) 00:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! The problem is that the file is claimed under "fair use" and the fair use rationale that I wrote is not very convincing. It was OK a few years ago but Wikipedia seems to significantly raise the requirements for fair use since then. I do believe that the fair use claim is valid but it will be difficult to argue if somebody would put it to deletion. Do you by any chance have an Amalrik photo with your copyright that you can release as GFDL or Creative Commons? Or may be you know an Amalrik photo with a story behind it so the fair use claim will be of better merit? Alex Bakharev (talk) 02:26, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Glad to have been of help, but no, I don't have a free-use photo of Amalrik, but I've been looking for one. More things are being digitalized all the time, so maybe something will turn up. Cheers! -- Cuppysfriend (talk) 23:36, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Gray fossil site
[edit]I saw you were the main creator of the Gray Fossil site page. FYI: I was able to get a few free image of turtle shell fossils. The Museum itself was very unhelpful, would not even let me come down and take my own photos (usually allowing others to do so is reasonable). however I got an image from another researcher and confirmed he was the actual taker of the photo and all.TCO (talk) 07:44, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

La Vang
[edit]I think they ought to remain separate. One is a secular geographic appellation. The other a name for a Marian apparition. You will note that both Fátima, Portugal and Lourdes, France have separate articles for the places and the appartions, even though like La Vang, the apparition is probably the most notable thing about the place. I think, as the articles grow, we will find they will differentiate. Matters which belong in the place article will not belong in the apparition article and more minute details of the appartition will not belong in the place article. Cheers. And thanks for the message. Mamalujo (talk) 16:31, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Governor Ralph Carr.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Governor Ralph Carr.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Non-free rationale for File:Ross Lockridge Jr 1947.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Ross Lockridge Jr 1947.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
