Move proposal

[edit]

I think this article should be moved to warship. Warship is the common English expression (e.g. 10 times as many Google hits) and the overwhelming majority of inlinks get redirected from warship anyway. Anyone disagree? Securiger 14:50, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I think so too. While I can only figure out what Chinese, Danish, and German links are to, I think majority of links are to "warship" in their own language. I was thinking of adding a link to Japanese wiki, and it is "warship" as well. Let's move it. Revth 12:53, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

History

[edit]

Gee, did warships originate in the 20th century? I'm embarassed to link Transport by sailing ship here. --Jerzy(t) 19:26, 2004 Dec 23 (UTC)

question

[edit]

Can anyone please tell me what a large fleet of warships is called?

No special term that I know of. Even the entirety of a navy's ship is still called "the fleet". Sometimes writers will use "armada" for dramatic effect, but it's just Spanish for "navy". Stan 13:40, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Depending on the [historical] context, you could also try "flotilla", "[carrier] battle group" or "task force". More here. --J Clear 15:23, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple Names Question

[edit]

Is there a standard way of dealing with ships that have changed name? I recently found the link on the List_of_auxiliaries_of_the_United_States_Navy#Missile_Range_Instrumentation_Ships_.28T-AGM.29 for the Vanguard to be an empty stub. I pointed this out to a former Vanguard crew member who shot me back the link to USNS Mission San Fernando. I edited the auxiliaries list to link to that, but display the Vanguard name. The Vanguard disambiguation page already points to MSF. It occurs to me that it might have been better to fill in the Vanguard stub with a redirect to the MSF. That would help any other links to Vanguard. It would also be easier if the MSF article ever grew to the point it made sense to break it up. Is there a wiki SOP for this? --J Clear 15:23, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After reading up on Wikipedia:Redirect it looks like making a Vanguard stub that's a redirect to the other name is acceptable. --J Clear 16:10, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
