I'm trying to be bold in tidying up these categories. I feel that Category:Alternative musical groups and Category:American musical groups were inappropriate, since the pages contained in this category are not musical groups. These are simply pages relating to The Smashing Pumpkins. Since the Pumpkins played alternative rock, I think this category should be a sub-category of Category:Alternative music.

I know there's no consensus for this structure instead of the previous categorization. I'm just trying to figure out something that makes more sense.

If there were a Category:Alternative rock I'd use it instead of Category:Alternative music.

See Wikipedia:Categorisation FAQ#Related topics, which says that "Topic categories are unlikely to be subcategories of list categories." The various Musical Groups categories are list categories, whereas Category:Smashing Pumpkins is a topic category. --Dbenbenn 02:42, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

A list category is a category made up of lists, with "List of..." in the title. This category is not a list; it is a legit article to be a subcategory of its previous categories. -- LGagnon 03:20, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, but at the moment I disagree. See Wikipedia:Categorisation FAQ#Categories as Lists. In particular, "the goal is that browsing downwards from a list parent category, e.g. Category:Cities, should only arrive at articles that are cities, e.g. London, and not related articles e.g. History of London." --Dbenbenn 03:33, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
