History of Lindy Hop
[edit]I need help moving History of Lindy Hop into "Lindy Hop" 2604:CA00:14C:2EF8:0:0:A62:A0CC (talk) 00:30, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Merging for info about what you want to do ... but also see this discussion. Merging might not be the easiest thing in the world here, because we'd have to make sure no important information is lost. For more help you can ask at the teahouse. Graham87 02:48, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Page overhaul
[edit]Hi @Swinginginair! Just wanted to check in to see how your work on this article is going. Have any questions come up that I could help answer?
When doing a big overhaul like this, one of the important things to think about from the start is how we want the sections to be organized, with the goal of covering the topic evenly from every angle. For Lindy Hop, a section on history is obviously warranted, and having a section on variations is also good. For the current article, though, the sections on times beginning with "1970s" seem redundant — isn't Lindy Hop in the '70s just a part of the history of Lindy Hop? I'd encourage merging all that into the history section.
For other sections, I think we definitely want one on the music. There could be one on Lindy Hop moves (which shouldn't go into too much detail — there could probably be a separate Lindy Hop choreography article). There could probably also be one on events, with information on what typical socials look like, how there are also competitions/exchanges and how they're run, etc. (There is a fair amount of anthropological research on dance that could be helpful here as citations for info like the demographics of contemporary Lindy Hoppers.)
I see that you included some lists of works that feature Lindy Hopping. This is maybe okay for a "cultural influence" section, but many Wikipedians really frown on bulleted lists of cultural references.
The other piece of advice I'd have is to just emphasize again that references are incredibly important. I see that not all the info you've added is cited, and that makes it a lot more likely to be removed in the future. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 21:06, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- From the 60s-70s Lindy Hop died, and there is a scary bit of UK rock'n'roll history that brought about the revival, that needs to be flushed out, therefore I'm putting it there as a placeholder. I went ahead and changed the bullet points to sentences. Goodness, Lindy Hop choreography that would be a task too big for my small brain, as for demographics there is a study done in 2014 that shows graphs that might be useful. Competitions/exchanges would also be a big task to, something to think about. This dance is only 100 years old and needs a lot of researching, it is too big for one person for sure, which is why we definitely need an army to work on this.
- I'm going to sleep on the "cultural influence" section, that might need to be in another area or something.
- I'll try harder on getting more citations in there. Thank you so much for your help! Swinginginair (talk) 22:07, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Swinginginair, yeah, overhauling an article like this is definitely a big task — luckily Wikipedia is collaborative, so you can always leave it to others to make improvements down the road, even with e.g. {{Empty section}}. Some of the structural things I mentioned above can help set the article on a good path to make it easier for those who come later, though. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}} talk 03:50, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
