Category

[edit]

Might it be worth having a category for all these people? Category:Members of the Cambridge Footlights? Mpntod 17:56, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

I like the idea of a category. Can anyone think of a snappier name for it, though? --Paul A 03:33, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Oh, I see someone has. --Paul A 04:01, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Seems to work well. Some interesting connections.  :-) Mpntod 08:23, Sep 3, 2004 (UTC)

And at some point it went away again. I wonder why. —Tamfang (talk) 06:08, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adams

[edit]

Isn't it a little inaccurate to say Adams was a member? Most accounts seem to report that he didn't get on very well with Footlights, joining instead CULES and later forming his own group.

That's what I thought. According to Don't Panic, joining Footlights was one of his motives in going to Cambridge, but he was very unimpressed with it "It had become a director's show, not a writer's show", and set up Adams-Smith-Adams instead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.18.173.0 (talk) 21:27, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Douglas Adams was a member of Footlights and came back after graduation to direct the tour show in 1976 ('A Kick in The Stalls'). He did become frustrated with several of the people in the club during his time as an undergraduate, though some of them made it into the Hitchhiker cast. I was club secretary in 1998 and Douglas Adams was guest speaker at the Footlights annual dinner in June that year, during which he talked about his memories of the club and had many suggestions for the committee at the time. Also, he is listed on the official website - so if they consider he was a member, he needs to be included. --92.21.49.94 (talk) 01:45, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Footlights-book.jpg

[edit]

Image:Footlights-book.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Prestigious

[edit]

I am not suggesting that the Cambridge Footlights is not prestigious, I am just slightly annoyed how this has become its epithet on every single one of its members' wikipedia pages. There are many prestigious things out there... no one writes 'The politician became an MP and thereby joined the prestigious UK Parliament'. No one even writes 'He went to the prestigious Cambridge University'. I just seems very silly. --129.11.198.174 (talk) 14:06, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There is a cfd discussion here on the related category. -- roundhouse0 (talk) 15:49, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Women

[edit]

"Eric Idle was the first president to allow women to join the Footlights." Just wondering if this is true, since Eleanor Bron was in a Footlights production in 1959 and Idle wasn't president until 1965. 194.75.129.200 (talk) 11:29, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I also spotted that; And as there is no verifiable evidence for this being the case and the footlights own website disagreeing with this statement, needs to be removed. --92.21.49.94 (talk) 01:49, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was Sacha Baron Cohen in the Footlights?

[edit]

This page says that Sacha Baron Cohen was in the Footlights, but the list of alumni at the official Footlights Web site doesn't include him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.246.167.146 (talk) 15:57, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Considering that Wikipedia shouldn't have entries unless verifiable, should be removed until evidence available. --92.21.49.94 (talk) 01:43, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to a BBC interview, he was refused entry. Have updated page accordingly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.1.101.8 (talk) 09:06, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

W. S. Gilbert

[edit]

W. S. Gilbert was listed on this page as a member. I do not believe this can be right (not least as he was born in 1836 and would have been 47(ish) when Footlights was founded. Believe confusion is because during first 9 years of Footlights, only already written shows were performed and one of Gilbert's plays (On Bail) was performed so he is listed on the Footlights website. By this logic, Jacques Offenbach would also be a member and he was dead by the time Footlights was founded. I am removing unless there is any evidence (which I seriously doubt) of his membership. --92.21.49.94 (talk) 01:41, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Theatre, shows, etc

[edit]

This article doesn't say much about where the club performs, how many shows and performances per term, what shows, etc. In an interview with Douglas Adams, he mentions the theatre having been knocked down, so clearly they've been in a number of places over time... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.174.41.72 (talk) 07:56, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notable former members

[edit]

Due to the 'notable former members' section having become so large in size, perhaps we could create a new page especially for this listing. Just a thought. Figaro (talk) 08:37, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Due to there having been no response to my previous comment, as yet, I decided to go ahead and create a separate page for this section. I hope that this is ok. Figaro (talk) 09:37, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Presidents

[edit]

I do not see the point of having two lists, 'Past notable presidents' and 'List of presidents'. The former is jut a subset (subjectively chosen) of the latter. 109.149.212.105 (talk) 22:30, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

The "Past notable presidents" section helps readers to better identify with some of the more recent presidents - while the "List of presidents" shows in which years the various presidents were incumbents of the position. Hope this helps. Figaro (talk) 04:08, 28 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

1981 Cambridge Footlights Revue

[edit]

It is interesting that Rowan Atkinson took part in the 1981 Cambridge Footlights Revue because he attended Oxford University, where he studied for a degree in Electrical Engineering, and also where he received his Master's degree, and where he took part in Oxford Revues. As far as I am aware, Rowan Atkinson never attended Cambridge University. Does anyone know how Rowan Atkinson came to take part in the Footlights Revue (perhaps he attended Cambridge University for a PhD degree - or perhaps a Doctor of Engineering degree)? Does anybody know. Thanks. Figaro (talk) 11:18, 12 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
