Worth Mentioning?

I just found out that the word "to count" in Russian (which is effectively how the game Shithead is played) is pronounced "Shchitat" .... could this be a coincidence? I think there maybe something interesting in the game's origins maybe from Russia? Maybe it is not originally from Finland .... Why is this just about the game shithead? Why not also about the expletive? Or of the use of "shithead" to refer to certain breakfast cereals? It seems there are many legitimate uses of "shithead."

Could we mention that "shithead" is the name of Steve Martin's dog in 'The Jerk'?

Asshole, President, etc

Not having played any of these, can someone explain to me why we have separate articles at President (game) and Shithead (card game), and why Asshole is listed on the aliases for both? -- nae'blis 01:21, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I have played both President and Shithead, and I can tell you that the only similarities between them are that they both focus more on who loses than who wins; they both require you to play cards of equal or higher value than the last play, and that certain cards have special functions. I believe Asshole is another name for President, and not for Shithead, but there does exist a lot of confusion on the issue. I'm going to look at these articles again and see if I can clear anything up. Dansiman 03:43, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Asshole and president are names of a same game, but that game is different from Shithead. Asshole/President belongs to a same family with Dalmuti and Tichu, characterized by the following (1) a player can play combinations of cards, and a combination can be beaten with a higher combination of the same type (2) if you do not have a valid play, you simply pass (with not further penalty). The cards in the pile burn only after everyone except for one player have passed in a row (3) all the cards are dealt.

Rules

I have seen a rule common in the UK whereby if 3 of the same value (not suit) are put down together, possibly by three different players! then if another player should have the 4th card no matter where they are in the order of play, then if they are quick enough they can slam it down, clear the deck and possibly win the game OR its their go next. Grammatical correction. On the first line of the article it states that the game is known as "shed". This should be "sh'ed", as in an abbreviation of "shit head". This word is still pronounced "shed".

Do players have to play if they can?

One of my competitive buddies will just pick up the deck even if he can play for “strategy”. How are we going to address this? I might’ve missed this in the rules but he is saying if it isn’t stated outright that he has to play if he can, then he is in the clear. Please advise.

The card game rules here on Wikipedia are generally fine if they are well referenced, but they can suffer from tampering or editors adding the latest quirk of their local rules. If in doubt go to John McLeod's website at pagat.com on which these rules appear to be based; see here. The key rules from his site are:

• Taking turns clockwise, each player must either play a card or a set of equal cards face up on top of the discard pile, or pick up the pile...
• If at your turn you cannot or do not wish to play a card, you must pick up all the cards in the discard pile and add them to your hand.
• If you pick up you do not play any cards on that turn...
• As long as you begin your turn with cards in your hand... you can only play from the cards in your hand on that turn.

So your buddy can legally pick up the discard pile (not the deck) even if he can play a card, but he cannot play any cards that turn and, on his next turn he can only play from his hand. You can always copy his tactic or, as in any card game, you can have local or 'house' rules as long provided everyone agrees. Hope that helps. Bermicourt (talk) 08:14, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
