[edit]Redirects: American locks, Davis Lock, Sabin Lock, MacArthur Lock, Poe Lock, Canadian lock
What is the correct name of these -Sault locks or Soo locks? The Army corps of engineers which manage them consistenty calles them the Soo Locks. The EPA quotes Coast Guard documents calling them the Sault Locks. Google gives over 8,000 hits for Soo. Only 600 for Sault. We don't even have a redirect yet for the other spelling. - Redirects already in place, but to answer your question: It's just a language thing. In French, Saint Mary's Falls is Sault Sainte Marie. Situated as they are near Canada, it's no surprise that both English and French names exist for various landmarks. --Abqwildcat 21:55, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Whether spelled Soo or Sault, it is pronounced Soo. I don't know French, but I suspect the French pronunciation of Sault is very close to Soo. --(rds47, 00:34 CST, 10 Aug 2006)
Having used to live in Sault Ste. Marie, I can tell you that the town name is frequently shorted to just "Soo" for convenience. The proper name is more than likely "Sault Ste. Marie Locks", but in practice the natives will call it the "Soo Locks".
Zebra Mussels
[edit]The Zebra mussels paragraph is both interesting and important, but what does it have to do with the locks? I think this belongs somewhere else, like in the Great Lakes article. — Johantheghost 22:32, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
The Locks...?
[edit]The "locks" section is totally confusing to me. Are these locks in series? Parallel? A diagram would be good, even a simple sketch, but please at least explain in words how they relate to each other. — Johantheghost 22:32, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- This page http://www.uscg.mil/d9/sault/gru/vts/history.htm suggests that the order of the US locks from south to north is MacArthur, Poe, Davis, Sabin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.126.200.232 (talk) 05:48, 6 April 2007 (UTC).
- Or you could do some research. The locks have been around for over a century. 67.199.215.79 (talk) 23:45, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
